Debris Afloat – Vancouver

October 2019
Vancouver, BC, Canada

The concept of Debris Afloat is inspired by natural disasters, and specifically by tsunamis and debris floating at sea and reaching the Canadian coast. More than a reflection on climate change and environmental tragedy, Debris Afloat brings you on a journey through human emotions.

Debris Afloat is a concept born from previous exchanges between Paras Terezakis working in Canada and Takako Matsuda working in Japan and Poland. Paras and Takako met in 2011 at the Bytom International Festival in Poland where they both were conducting workshops and performing. On this occasion, Takako saw Paras’ piece Box4, and the way he used the space raised her interest. She took his workshop and was very intrigued by his approach to dance and creation as it was in such opposition to her practice. Their international exchange started when, under invitation from Takako and Modern Ballet Matsuda, Paras went to Japan in 2012 to conduct his signature Dance Out Loud workshop and was then invited to Poland in 2018 by The Movement Foundation under Takako’s incentive. The exchange continued in 2019, when Takako came to Vancouver, BC under invitation from Kinesis Dance somatheatro.
