For Antigone

“I have nothing but contempt for the kind of governor who is afraid, for whatever reason, to follow the course that he knows is best for the State.” Sophocles, Antigone

In this collaboration commissioned by Davida Monk, we have not looked to tell the story of Sophocles’ classical play, but rather explore elements that touch the core of the main character. Antigone was a voice of protest against the powers of the time. She fought for the dignity and respect of the human spirit versus the conventional, archaic rules of society. She was brave and unapologetic in fighting for her rights as a woman and her expected role in society. These attributes resonate profoundly with me. As I have long admired Davida’s strength of character and conviction to her art form, it made this project a natural fit.  The addition of the male figure (Arash, as Creon) helped provide the contrast/opposition in the power dynamic – both physically and metaphorically. The play is 2500 years old, the universal theme remains as poignant as ever today.

This work was created as part of Global Dance Connections Series presented by the Scotiabank Dane Centre, Vancouver, BC, celebrating the work of Calgary-based choreographer, performer and teacher Davida Monk.
